Swine flu Outbreak At Second Cavan School
Another County Cavan school has witnessed an outbreak in suspected swine flu, it has emerged today.
Breffni College in Cavan town contacted the HSE yesterday after a number of pupils appeared to come down with flu-like symptoms.
According to reports this morning, the principal of the school has decided the school should remain open after discussions with medical experts in the HSE.
Parents at the school, which caters for 134 pupils, were briefed by public health officials yesterday, and were told that dampness may have been a contributory factor to the spread of the virus. Arrangements are being made for a public health doctor to visit the school today to meet parents, inform them of the outbreak and answer questions they may have.
HSE Specialist in Public Health Medicine Dr Peter Finnegan said students and staff at the school would be monitored for symptoms of the flu.
He strongly advised parents with children who might be ill not to send them to school.
The news of the infections follows an earlier outbreak at Laragh National School also in Co Cavan earlier this week which left 16 pupils ill.
On Wednesday, it was confirmed that the pupils at the Laragh School were ill with flu-like symptoms, with some of these being confirmed as cases of Influenza A (H1N1).
