Olympic Medalist Boxer Dies At 27

Darren Sutherland, Irish Olympic medal-winning boxer, has died at the age of 27.

Darren won bronze for Ireland at the Olympics in Beijing last year was found dead at his flat in south London yesterday.

It is being reported that he had taken his own life.

After a mighty performance in China, Darren quickly turned professional winning his first fight in Dublin last December by knockout.

His next professional fight had been scheduled for next month.

Born in London in 1982 to an Irish mother and father from the Caribbean, Mr Sutherland spent most of his childhood in Dublin before the family relocated to Navan in Co Meath.

Darren 'The Dazzler' soon claimed three senior Irish boxing titles and two European Union gold medals.

Irish Olympic Council President Pat Hickey has described the middleweight boxer as the life and soul of the Irish Olympic squad.

Mr Hickey said: ''His Olympic colleagues enjoyed his irrepressible good humour and his keen interest in all of the various sports that Ireland participated in. He was simply a superb individual who had time for everyone. He will be sorely missed.''

Darren was found by his manager Frank Maloney, who has described the death as a "tragedy for Ireland and the world of boxing''.

A Metropolitan Police spokesman said the death in Bromley, south London, was not being treated as suspicious.
