Ireland-Wales Interconnector Approved

An Bord Pleanála has approved plans by EirGrid to build an interconnected electricity line between Ireland and Wales.

The proposed link will enable power transmission between the two countries from 2012.

Permission has also been given for the building of a converter station in Woodland, Co Meath, and the installation of underground cables to the coast at Rush in Co Dublin.

The new project is expected to lead to some 100 jobs during the construction phase, which is due to get underway next year.

Communications Minister Eamon Ryan has welcomed today's decision to approve the project.

A Spokesman for EirGrid said: "The project to build an electricity interconnector between Ireland and the UK is at an advanced stage in terms of progress, having secured connection points in Ireland and Britain, having signed construction contracts and having received backing from the government.

"The project will have a number of key benefits – creating more opportunities for competition, securing Ireland’s power supplies and increasing renewables."
